At this point, Restless came along to replace Pink Dust and Capitol
had gotten what they wanted from Enigma, so we negotiated for another
release in 1989. HAM & SAM JAMMIN was an idea PIP had to title the record after a sensational wind-up toy. The little white cat belonged to Eric's mom when she was small, and the hand puppet is German, the dollhouse belonged to me. We were combining talents with Paul Everett, Ben McLellan (violin) for the demos, which ended up sounding better than the actual release cuz Ben freaked
out and moved away, blanket and all. Kevin Fallon came in to overdub
violin tracks while Eric & Paul collaborated with Masharam Heller
and Julius (Crippled Pig w/ Stumpo 1966-1970), the record is VERY much
a rock record, co produced by Deb and Paul Kolderie at Fort Apache in
Boston. Pip (Coat Of Arms/Delta Clutch) sang much of it, and it sounds
less like a Plan 9 record as a result, and in the middle of the tour,
both Paul and Frank decided to quit, as the record did not live up to
their expectations, aurora borealis aside.
Ham & Sam produced Mambo Night
a song for which arena rockers could have easily done the continual
wave, and a video by inde film producer John Mortitsogu, which Restless
managed to move to an MTV audience, briefly. It's magic!
A short mention here of Bug Killers Joey Traverse, funky bassman and Troy Williams drummer, we recorded the best Around The USA with this unit, unreleased demo on 4 track, give it a listen, we went off to Canada in a Van. It was good. The hurricane killed my fish, Joey went to LA...
